Michael Gambon, the Irish actor best known for playing Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" films, has died at the age of 82. His family confirmed his death in a brief statement issued on Thursday through a public relations company.

"Michael died peacefully in his sleep after a short illness," the statement said. "He will be deeply missed by his family and friends."

Gambon was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1940. He began his acting career in the 1960s, appearing in a number of British television shows and films. He gained international recognition in the 1980s for his role in the BBC drama series "The Singing Detective."

In 2004, Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore from Richard Harris, who had died the previous year. He played the wise and benevolent headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the final six "Harry Potter" films.

Gambon's performance as Dumbledore was widely praised by critics and fans alike. He brought warmth and humanity to the role while capturing the character's wisdom and power.

In addition to his work on the "Harry Potter" films, Gambon had a long and distinguished career on stage and screen. He won four British Academy Television Awards for his work in television. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway production of "The Life of Galileo."

Gambon is survived by his wife, Anne Miller, and their two children.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the "Harry Potter" books, wrote on Twitter: "I'm so sad to hear of the passing of Michael Gambon. He was a wonderful actor and a dear friend. He will be remembered as one of the greatest Dumbledores of all time."
